Extremely talented musicians
Derek Trucks is an absolutely phenomenal guitar player and worthy of Rolling Stone Mag's ranking of #16 guitarist of all time. Songs had a bit of a formula....opening jam rhythm with her belting out powerful blues lyrics, 1-3 minutes of Trucks jamming out on guitar solo, back to her for finish up. Their cover of "The Letter" was phenomenal....her voice was a perfect fit. I was amazed by how effortless it looked for him even when he was totally ripping it up. I know it was "jazz fusion" which isn't something I personally am a big fan of, but this was particularly unenjoyable to me...seemed totally random with no rhythm and no relation to the songs. Definitely worth the price as there is some serious talent in this band. I must say the 2-3 saxophone solos were painfully awful IMO. I suggest the second his first solo starts would be the perfect time for a trip to the restroom or to grab a beer. Don't get me wrong, the formula works and I loved the songs but a little variation would be nice. Journey's voice is awesome; very powerful, soulful blues voice. They also did a BB King cover which was great; though I don't know if anyone outside of Memphis gets that one. To this uneducated (in jazz) listener, it sounded like you gave someone a sax and just told them to make noise. I will say it seemed she sang in that lane all night and while awesome, a little variation/subtlety on occasion would have been nice as the songs started to sound somewhat the same.
